The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was written by Washington Irving as a short story. It was part of a larger collection of short stories written while he was living in Birmingham, England. It was first published in 1820. As the Legend of Sleepy Hollow is still among the earliest American fiction stories widely read today, it is no wonder many people search the Internet for Holloween related items.
The story is about a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow in a Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, New York (circa 1790). A schoolmaster from Connecticut by the name of Ichabod Crane and a rowdy townsman named Abrahan Van Bruant competed for the hand of the 18 year old daughter of a wealthy farmer. The daughters name was Katrina Van Tassel.
One autumn night (which many people have now come to believe was Halloween or Holloween), Crane left a party at Katrina's home and was persued by the Headless Horseman. The Headless Horseman is supposed to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper of the American Revolutionary War. As the story goes, he lost his head in some nameless battle and he rides nightly in a quest to find his head. Ichabod Crane disappears from town one night and Katrina is left with Brom Bones who is thought to be the headless horseman.
The adaptation of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow may have come from folk tales or poems of a wild chase from Burgers' Der wilde Jager (The Wild Horseman-1796) or Tam O Shanter written by Robert Burns.
There have been multiple adaptations of this story put to film including :
1992 - The Headless Horsemen (silent film) starring Will Rogers as Ichabod Crane
1949 - The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad produced by the Walt Disney Company. The Sleepy Hollow portion was separated from the Mr. Toad portion and marketed as a separate animated film in 1958.
1992 - Are you Afraid of the Dark - Nickelodeon television series
1999 - Sleepy Hollow directed by Tim Burton staring Jonny Depp.
